A time relay, unlike a timer, starts executing a set programme only after a control signal (power supply or an additional control terminal) is applied to it. One of the most common applications is when it is necessary to perform some kind of automatic switching on/off not immediately, but after a certain period of time set by the user.

A timer is a device that does not require a control signal to start operation and uses a real-time clock, calendar (for daily, weekly, annual timers) or physical coordinates of the installation location (for astronomical timers) to program events.
